Making Money with Articles: Article Directories

Article directories are websites that house free articles. These articles are usually put there by whoever owns the copyright to them as a promotion method. Each article has the owners byline placed under it so that those who eventually read the article will know who wrote it (or at least who owns it) and will be able to get in contact with or visit their website for further information.

Articles directories are a great place to put your articles so that they will make you money. By using this method, people who are interested in your product or service will see your article, view you as an expert in the subject, and will visit your website. Even if you cannot write or do not have any knowledge on the subject on which you are promoting (for example for you run an affiliate website), you can always hire a writer to do the work for you. Getting quality articles written will be expensive up front, but they will pay for themselves in no time, either through affiliate sales or selling your own services, and everything from then on is pure profit.

Let’s take a real life example. Imagine that you are an accountant working from home. You write an article on an accounting topic and place it on various article directories. Those who are looking for the subject you wrote about will read your article, see that you have the knowledge and skill that is needed to do a job for them, and visit your website or contact you via e-mail. Your article just gained you a new client who may use your services regularly, but will definitely give you a nice profit at least once.

Furthermore, since you have posted it on a free article directory, others who have affiliate websites about accounting will inevitably use your article for their website. Since they must attach your byline to it, this will bring you even more exposure for every website that re-posts your article. This because you will be benefiting of off the traffic that they get to their website.

There are numerous article directories out there for you to utilize. Your bet best is to put a copy of each of your articles on every one for maximum exposure. It will eventually help to bring more traffic and customers to your website, which will lead to new orders and more profit.

Earn Online Cash with a Niche Adsense Blog

One way to earn cash online is with Google Adsense. Yes, everybody and their brother’s sister’s cousin is using it on their website and they’ll probably telling you that they consider themselves lucky to be making $8 and change in a month. Why is it that they’re earnings are so low? Well, there are some reasons for that and they should become obvious to you as we work through this article.

What we want to work on are simple sites that will earn an average of $10 a day using Adsense. I know this isn’t a huge amount of money, only about $300 a month. However, it’s relatively easy to create such a blog so you can setup at least 3 sites per month without too much trouble. Soon it begins to add up to some really decent earnings. I’m also going to concentrate primarily on using free tools to do this. While there are paid tools like SEO Elite, Keyword Elite, Bookmarking Demon and many others that can help automate this process I’m going to concentrate on the cheapest route to earning cash online here.

Keyword Research

The first thing is to decide on the right niche to target. You want to avoid high competition keywords where some real Adsense and SEO pros are dominating search results. You’re unlikely to get to page 1 or even page 5 in Google search results with these keywords unless you have a lot of time to spend. You also want to avoid keywords that don’t pay well. There are many keywords that only pay a penny or two a click. What we want are keywords where we can get an average of $1 a click.

How can you tell which ones to select? Easy, go to Google’s Adwords keyword tool and enter keywords that you want to research. Keep researching until you have a short list of promising keywords. Make sure that you display the price per click and divide that number by 4 or 5 to determine the most likely price per click you’ll get on your site. For example, if the Estimated Avg. CPC in the Adwords tool shows $4.80 then your average earnings per click will be about $1.06. You will also want to find keywords that get reasonable traffic. While lower traffic niches can be profitable, they can also be frustrating. I’d recommend looking for between 2000 and 20000 searches a month to start with to get the best beginner results.

Now, go to Google and search for the keywords using the SEOQuake browser plugin. Look at the top 10 ranking sites and see what their Google PageRank, Google pages indexed and Yahoo backlinks they have. If these numbers are high and the page shown in results is an exact keyword match, then move on to your next keyword. If there is no keyword match or if they have few links you may have a winner. For borderline cases, this will require further analysis that’s beyond the scope of our discussion here. This article, Targeted Keyword Research, describes the process in a little more depth.

Oh, an remember we’re looking for buying keywords, not informational keywords. I discussed this in this previous article: Buying Keywords. Fortunately, in most cases, better paying keywords are already going to be buying keywords.

Build Your Niche Blog

We’re going to go cheap here and not buy a domain and put WordPress on it. Instead, we’re going to use a plain old ugly Blogger blog. There are some potential drawbacks and pluses associated with using them and if you want to review the pros and cons, check out this article I wrote a while ago on the subject: Niche Blog Hosting: WordPress vs. Blogger. Update: I’ve heard through the grapevine that Google now requires that you have your own domain that has been indexed at least 90 days old to be approved for a new Adsense account. If this is true you will need to buy at least one domain and wait it out, get approval for that domain and then you can use the account anywhere you want as long as you’re within the Adsense rules. If you have already been previously approved for an Adsense account you’re OK though.

You’ll want to select a name that matches your primary keyword. It is likely that your primary keyword will already be taken. If this is case, just add a filler word to the name such as ‘mykeyword’ or ‘thekeyword’ or ‘keywordinfo’. The important thing is to get our keyword in the URL.

We’ll want to use the simple Minima template, we don’t want a fancy blog, we want just another ugly Blogger blog. We will also want to set it up to show only one post per page since this helps Google’s search and Adsense ‘bots to get the exact keywords for your article and not get confused. The blog title and description should be for the primary keyword and secondary long tail keywords that you want to target with only filler words between them. You can add some navigation widgets to the sidebar if you want but don’t overdo this. I also recommend that you add in a Statcounter and/or Google Analytics counter to your footer. This will help you track the performance of your keywords.

Creating Niche Blog Content

Now we’re ready to create some content for our blog. I generally prefer to create content offline in an editor like Microsoft Live Writer, Microsoft Word or even Windows Notepad. There are plenty of tools you can use to do this. I just like doing it this way so that I have a local backup copy of my articles. Start off with writing about 10 articles. The title will use your primary keyword, for example “Earn Online Cash” with matching long tails like “Earn Online Cash with Adsense”. Begin and end your article with a sentence that uses your primary keyword and include it several times throughout the article but don’t overdo it. If you need some more tips on writing, let me know and I’ll point you to some other articles I’ve written on this topic.

You will also want to create a ‘policies’ post since this is required for Adsense. You can combine this with a simple ‘about me’. This will be the first post you add to your new blog. Remember that it should follow the same naming conventions as other posts for example: “Earn Online Cash: Policies”. Add a link to this post in your sidebar so that it will always be just one click away from any other page on your blog.

Now add 3 of your content posts to the blog. You’ll add a new post about once a week until all of your original posts are up. After that, you’ll only need to post infrequently, if at all. New posts can help bring more keywords into the blog but, as long as you’re getting good search engine traffic, updating can be at your leisure.

Promote Your Niche Blog

Promoting your blog is primarily getting it indexed and getting links to it.

You might want to start with the techniques I describe in this article: Quick Indexing. While you can’t add all those ping sites to Blogger like you can WordPress you can use some of the pinging sites to ping others. I also suggest that you submit your site to RSS aggregation sites. JR at “Get Internet Marketing Strategies” has a good list of them here: RSS/Blog Submission Sites. You don’t have to submit to all of them and some won’t accept Blogger blogs but you can find enough to get your rolling. Remember the primary idea is to use these resources for indexing of new content.

Now, we’ll want to build links to our blog. There are a number of different strategies here and people generally settle on ones that work well for them. I’ll give you a few basic methods here and you can work on it from there.

One good way to get some basic links is to use social bookmarking. JR has some good lists of sites in these two articles: Do-Follow Social Sites and High PR Do-Follow Social Sites. There are other list around that you can use. In general, you want to look for social sites that are do-follow and will allow Blogger blogs.

Another way to build links to your site is to have promotional sites of your own. You can use Squidoo, Synthasite, Blinkweb and other free sites to build single page sites to promote your site. You should also seek out other blogs and forums in your niche and related niches and leave comments there with a link to your site without being spammy. I cover this in more in depth in this article: Driving Traffic to Your Site.

With reasonable link building promotional work you should begin to see search traffic for your keywords within a relatively short period of time. What you’re looking for is for your blog to be on page one of Google for your select keyword. If it’s not, then the niche may be more competitive than you realized and you’ll have to put more promotional effort into it. If you are in the #1 position and you aren’t getting traffic then the problem may be that the keyword you select doesn’t produce enough traffic. In this case, you might try targeting different keywords or retire the blog to a supporting, promotional, role.

Add Adsense to Your Niche Blog

OK, now that you’re getting traffic to your niche blog and it’s steady traffic, it’s time to add Adsense. My recommendation is to add a single large rectangle block at the top and, optionally, a wide skyscraper in the sidebar. This should result in a good click through rate as long as you’ve selected a good buying keyword. Since you’re already getting search traffic to your site it will be easy for the Adsense ‘bot to determine what your blog is about and begin serving appropriate ads.

At this point, you should begin to see clicks and revenue from your blog. It will take a few weeks for the pricing of your site to settle down so expect some wild gyrations in income at first. Eventually, it will settle down.

If your earnings stay low this may indicate a problem with your keyword selection. Try editing your articles to better emphasize the higher paying keywords and de-emphasizing lower paying ones.

If your CTR is low, typically under 3%, this may indicate that you haven’t selected a good buying keyword or your traffic is from a niche that’s somewhat jaded or resistant when it comes to Adsense ads. If this is the case, you may want to try moving toward better keywords with new posts, move the blog to a supporting role or just live with the lower click through rate. Remember that a low CTR won’t hurt you but a low CTR with clicks that don’t convert might hurt you.

Earn Cash with Your Niche Blog

Remember the key to this method is not to get bogged down and obsess over one blog but to keep moving. The more blogs you create and the more promotion (aka links) that you do the better your chance will be at earning cash online.

Whew! This was a long article. Way too long. I should have padded it out and made it into an eBook and sold it for $47 or made some money some other way like having you sign up for a membership site or an email list, right? Well, I’m just trying to do the same thing that people who helped me.

How to Get Traffic to your Website or Blog

In general there are two free sources of traffic online. These sources are broadly defined as Social traffic and Search Engine traffic. 99% of all newcomers online set up a blog or website and proceed to try and obtain social traffic. They do this simply because everyone else does it.

Social traffic consists of using social networks like Stumbleupon, Digg, Reddit, Entrecard, Forums and hundreds of other services that allow you to sign up and promote your site on them. These services are the backbone of what is known as Web 2.0 and has evolved into a newer version centered around Facebook, MySpace and the current craze - Twitter.

The general idea is to get out there and make friends online using these networks, draw them in to your site, wow them with your content and wait for the links to come pouring in from your adoring fans. As the links increase your traffic increases as more and more people find your site and in turn tell more people through the use of more links and one day you will become famous just like Darren Rowse of Problogger or failing personal fame you may still develop a hugely popular site like Engadget or the Huffington Post.

There is a certain appeal to all this - becoming popular has many advantages aside from the most obvious monetary considerations. Many people blog because they have something to say and just want an outlet for their views. Others dream of being a writer and use the net to publish their stories. Get your work out there and get discovered. Musicians and filmmakers use the net in the same way. Whatever your reason for starting a blog or website there will come a day when you say to yourself, “what is the point if no one is reading or watching or listening to my creative output?”

It is at that point that you will begin your quest to find traffic and invariably you will turn to the social networks. You will discover quite quickly that you can get social traffic fairly easily using Stumbleupon or even easier using Entrecard. Twitter might be the easiest of all. You will join forums and work at becoming an “authority” in your niche. You will make friends. They will send links. All will be wonderful… for a while.

Six months to a year down the road two things will happen - it always happens and it happens whether you have achieved a large readership or not. You wake up one day and realize that you are working like a dog and there is little to no benefit from all that work. Driving social traffic is a constant grind. If you stop posting, twittering, digging, stumbling, dropping entrecards, leaving comments on other blogs or any of the other daily chores needed to keep your name out there the traffic dries up. Moreover your health deteriorates and your friends and family are neglected as you spend hours and hours sitting in front of your computer single mindedly developing your brand. Even if you have managed to develope a few thousand RSS subscribers - something most beginners think of as a successful blogger - you will still ask yourself “is all this work worth it?”

Why? Because at some point everyone wants to be compensated for all that work. You may say now that you are just doing it because you like to “write” or you just need an outlet to release your opinions and I believe you. The problem is that you will not be satisfied just writing or opinionating if no one is reading your output. You will get sucked into the social traffic cycle and find out that it is work. And when you work that hard you will eventually want a monetary reward for it - in one form or another. Having 10,000 readers coming and reading just wont cut it if a book deal doesn’t materialize. Or you can’t make money from advertisers. Or JV (joint venture) offers don’t show up. No matter what your reason for blogging at some point you are going to want a reward for it and the more work you put into it the more return on time invested will be expected.

And that is the problem - you wont get a return from social traffic. They don’t spend money - they don’t click ads and the advertisers are no longer supplying inventory to social sites as that fact has become known. Today.com claims 10 million page views a month. That is fairly significant traffic. So why don’t we see the big advertisers on this site? Where are the finance/credit/bank advertisements? The auto company ads? The big brand names? What we see are ads for dating sites. And Adsense.

The advertisers are not coming to this domain in spite of the traffic. Today.com has had to find a means to monetize this site using affiliate marketing platforms which they are currently rolling out. Adsense does not perform well as the sub-domains are not targeted for premium CPC (cost per click) and are smart priced. They get pennies per click from adsense and the CTR is dismal at best. Today.com is a successful domain based on traffic but like many others online they have found out that all traffic is not equal. The majority of this domains traffic comes from social networks and social traffic does not convert well - meaning they can’t make much profit from it.

If you are reading this then chances are you have a site yourself and you spend a fair amount of time reading blogs and surfing the net. You are social traffic. When was the last time you bought something on a friends site? Or clicked on an Ad? You don’t do it often if at all and neither do all the other social bloggers and social network users. You are here to read. You are online looking for information and not looking to buy something.

Search engine traffic is quite different. Most people use the search engines - Google by far - when they need to find something. You don’t go to Today.com when you want tickets to a Broadway musical or are looking for a hotel in New York. You use Google. You have a purpose in mind and that usually entails buying something or at the least you need specific information about a specific thing. Search traffic is targeted and whether you are trying to make money online or just want readers, search traffic is the traffic you want because it consists of people looking specifically for what you are offering.

If you have a humor blog for no other reason than just to entertain then why not target people looking for humor blogs? The easiest way to do that is to rank number 1 in Google for the term “humor blog”. On average 2400 people a month will find your site. If you rank for more related keywords like “humorous photos”, “Humor writer”, “humor”, “funny pics”, “funny stories” etc then you will eventually have thousands of daily visitors to your site. And this is the best part - you can post when you want or not at all and the same traffic will show up every day. Moreover you will never have to spend 1 minute commenting on other blogs or stumbling or dropping entrecards or doing any of the other chores involved in social marketing. And the icing on the cake - your search traffic will click your ads. They will read your humorous post and because they found you while searching for humor they are likely going to click on those ads that point them to other humorous sites. They don’t care if they make you money or not - they are not bloggers. They are civilians looking for something and will click anything that leads them to their goal.

The process for obtaining search traffic is actually very simple but it does take work and most of all patience. It can also be done in conjunction with social traffic. The problem is 99% of bloggers only chase social traffic and completely shut the door on search traffic right from the get go. This doesn’t have to be and I will show you how to optimize for the search engines using some basic SEO techniques that will pay off hugely by the time you wane on social traffic. You can use social networks for immediate traffic while building your site for long term search traffic. If you don’t achieve search traffic then you will eventually burn out and all the social traffic in the world will not change that fact.

SEO Basics that must be used in order to drive search traffic to your blog are as follows;

You must use your keyword in your URL.

You must use your keyword in your Blog Title.

You must use your keywords in your Post Titles.

You must use your keywords and related terms in your post content.

You will get the best search results by only posting one post per page unless all your posts are related to the same keywords.

If using Adsense then always stick to one post per page.

If using photos then your keywords should be used in the alt tags.

You must use html for the bulk of your pages content. (plain old text)

These simple little steps are all you need to do to optimize your site for the search engines. You will get indexed for your keywords and ranked well. How high you get ranked depends on the competition. If there is little competition you could achieve top ranking doing little else. (Many of you experience some Google traffic for long tail keywords. This is because you used a term in your content that has little competition and Google found your site when someone searched for that term - unfortunately these terms don’t often provide much traffic) If there is a lot of competition then you will need backlinks pointing to your site using your keyword in the anchored text of the link pointing to you. That is all that is required to dominate any keyword online. Simple yes. In practice the hard part will be obtaining all the anchored backlinks needed to dominate a competitive keyword but following my on-site advice will make this task much easier - especially if you use social networks.

Now let me demonstrate what I am talking about.

I mentioned “humor” a few paragraphs ago as a lead in for my example site. But first a pre-amble to fill you in.

It seems I ruffled a few feathers in a post on my main site a few weeks ago. I mentioned that the bloggers on Today.com were beginners and the reason was to point out that most of the bloggers on here are following a failed strategy. They are almost without exception chasing social traffic and will eventually quit blogging for all the reasons I mentioned above. They will work their butts off making a few dollars a day and burn out. Most will not even do the social chasing and will quit long before they make a few dollars a day. This isn’t any different here or with beginners who start a self hosted blog or use free domains like Blogger that can be fully monetized. The fact is most of the people blogging today will not be blogging in six months. They give it a go, fail to attract readers, fail to attract money or both and quit. I have seen this cycle for years and anyone that has lasted as long as a year knows this is true. We see it time and again. Very few people actually do the work - the majority of my readers have been reading my blogs for a year or two and still haven’t built a site. It is what it is.

I highlighted one blogger in particular in my post - not to bash her - but because she is one of the few on Today that has the work ethic to succeed. She has a “humorous Photo ” blog and drives the most traffic to her site of all the Today bloggers. She does it using social traffic and works her tail off to do it. She is the type of person who could succeed online with a little SEO knowledge. It is unfortunate that her reaction was quite negative.

Tact is not my strong suit and those who know me have seen this kind of reaction before. The thing is you also know I am going to show Melissa how she can improve her traffic stats whether she wants to listen or not. Her site is the perfect example of what not to do in regards to search traffic and by illustrating the mistakes it will become clear to both her and others how some simple tweaks could make a huge difference in her long term success. If it’s any consolation to Melissa she should know I only “pick on” bloggers who have the talent to succeed - there is no point in highlighting those that don’t.

This post is long enough so I will demonstrate on-site SEO next post and illustrate exactly why you should follow my advice regarding keywords using both Melissa’s site and mine. The results will not leave you in doubt about how effective it is at building links and traffic.

Give the people what they want and make money online with pay per install

A new and good yet still undiscovered way of making money online seriously is pay per install which you may consider. Pay per install does not require you to know extensively about internet marketing in order the get the most out of it as well as lots of time to be dedicated in order to be successful like other making money online methods such as pay per click, forum posting, article marketing, and many others. Therefore, pay per install is great money making online method for the beginners to apply it with their fundamental knowledge, experience and skills in the internet business.

Moreover, usually in order to make money online with other methods such as pay per click or PPC and cost per action or CPA, you need to get the people either to click on ads or to sign up to a free offer before you are actually earn any income. However, as for pay per install, what you need to do is providing the people with something that is exactly what they want for free while you make money out of it. As long as you can provide them a free thing that they want, they can do the promotion and advertising for you when they spread out the word on the internet about you and your free offer in order for them to share it with their friends and anybody who they think might be interested too.

Another common way of making money online which is becoming an affiliate requires you to search for products or services which you are interested in to promote and sell and you will earn certain percentage for each product sold. No doubt, an affiliate program can make lots of money but only to internet marketer who knows how to do it.

And another problem with affiliate program is that the product or service that you can sell are limited to certain stuffs only such as e-books, software, membership site, and other things which available via online only. When other internet marketers promote and sell the same way and at the same place as you do, therefore it is quite tough for you to compete with others. With pay per install you can promote your pay per install affiliate programs by using any method that you want and anywhere you want and there is no restriction.

When your internet marketing strategy is not restricted then you can compete more with other internet marketers and your chance of making money online will be greater too. Basically, in order for you to make the full use of pay per install, you should search for an offer that lots of people are seeking for and you make it available for them to get. This way, you can make your promotion simpler as well as save your time.

Even though pay per install affiliate programs can give you good way in making money online, however, in the past, this kind of affiliate program tended to be connected to virus, malware, spyware, and other bad things also installed on the people's computers.

Pay per install programs which you can be affiliated to vary from ebook, ereports, videos or software. Then you will earn your affiliate commission every time when people download and install the program or software, or others from your affiliate link. Most of the time, the software publishers or developers use pay per install internet marketing strategy to promote their products in a way of giving a limited time or limited features of free trial of their software for their internet business strategy.

However, there are two major draw backs in pay per install affiliate program which you should not overlook.

The first drawback is that before you choose any pay per install affiliate program, you should check whether the owner of the affiliate program accepts your country of residence or not, because some affiliate programs only accept and make payment to a limited number of certain countries.

The second drawback is that, up to now there are still some pay per install affiliate programs which keep on attaching the virus, spyware, malware, and others which definitely will cause anger of your website or blog’s visitors, and thus give you a bad reputation and they will not trust you anymore.

Click Fraud

If you're using AdWords or AdSense you must have heard about an emerging practice in the underworld of computing called "click fraud". But what exactly is click fraud and how is it accomplished?

Well AdSense uses a payment mechanism that awards a certain amount of money to a publisher (someone who holds an AdSense banner on their page) every time a person clicks on the said banner. So click fraud is the attempt to have people clicking the ads just so that they can earn a greater income.

There are people setting up sites for the sole purpose of fraudulently generating revenue through Google's AdSense program. These users achieve an incredible number of clicks through many methods, some complex and sophisticated and some rudimentary and simple.

One of the most complex is through the use of so called "hitbots". These are automated programs who emulate clicking the links in AdSense banners (there are some that actually click the banners as well).

Google's AdSense protection scheme is by no means perfect and nearly anyone can find the details of surmounting the protection mechanism, ironically just by doing a Google search.

Another, more rudimentary method is to hire a lot of people in a poor country to click the links on your site. This means these people will actually sit all day and just click links so you can earn a fortune. They come from very poor countries like India, and they're prepared to do so for just $0.50 an hour.

Of course, there's a problem with this mechanism. Once Google receives a large number of clicks from a single address, the address and the site that had the AdSense banner will be banned, and the illicit behavior might even get the fraudster sued.

To prevent this from happening, many people use a large number of proxy servers for the purpose of clicking. These are basically trojans, located on computers throughout the world (though mostly in the US). What's even more daunting is that these clicks will appear to originate from an actual computer so such scams are really hard to detect.

And don't think this happens only in isolated instances. There is a great deal of illegal activity in this domain.

In fact there's so much that if search engine companies don't increase their security with such programs as AdSense, such criminal behavior could become more become even more damaging.

Google has a very strict policy regarding click fraud, and it has sued those employing such techniques in the past. But while the search engine giant tries its best to minimize the risk of click fraud there's certainly room for a lot of improvement.

It is estimated that more then 20% of the clicks that follow an AdSense link are just done in order to get money from the person paying for the ad. Some people believe the number of fraudulent clicks to be even twice as large.

There are a great deal more schemes involving click fraud, such as groups of AdSense publishers clicking each other's links (which is referred to as "clicking rings", or spamming people so that they click such links.

Despite Google still holding click fraud on a leash, the phenomenon is certainly raising concerns for the advertisers on AdWords, but despite this advertising with Google's AdSense still remains more profitable for the advertiser, as opposed to traditional untargeted advertising schemes.

There are some means of protection against such schemes and all advertisers should be savvy enough to employ them. Many advertisers choose to avoid the content network all together for fear of click fraud.

How to Pick a Niche

Before you get a website, you have to find your niche. A “niche” is a specific topic that you’ll base your entire website on. The topic might be “financial planning” or “baseball” or “knitting.” Regardless of the topic you choose (it can be anything) it needs to meet a few common criteria.

A website needs to have a common theme. The reason it needs to be about a common theme is simple for two reasons:

  • Visitors. When someone shows up on your website they should see a single common theme. If they are looking for information about taking trips, they should see nothing but travel info. If they want information about dieting, then they should see nothing but dieting related info.
  • Search Engines. Search engines rank you higher for a keyword if your website is chock full of info. This means more traffic later down the road, which means more money.

This common theme has three criteria for being a good idea for a website if you want to monetize your website in the future. So there needs to be a common theme. Right. Now what? Now you move on to figure out what that theme is. It’s something you have to be passionate about, it needs to be fairly popular, and there doesn’t need to be too much competition.

  • Passion. Your niche needs to be something that you are passionate about. You’ll be writing literally dozens of articles on the topic, and will be thinking a lot about it. Don’t start a website on something just because you think it will make you money.
  • Popularity. There needs to be a lot of interest in your niche. If you have the perfect website in the niche of “the philosophy of anchovies” … you probably won’t make much money.
  • Competition. The less competition in the niche, the better. A great way to check the competition is to go to Google.com, type in the main keywords of the niche you are considering, and then analyzing the websites that come up on the first page. If all of the websites on the first page have over 10,000 links to them (you can check them individually at BacklinkWatch.com), then that’s probably too competitive for your first website. You can still try it, but it will be difficult.

Just remember, don’t pick a topic just because you think other people will like it — make sure you pick a topic because you like it. Your niche has to be your passion… a hobby, a pass-time, an expertise, a business idea — something along those lines. When you finish picking the topic for your website, move on to the next step… building your own website.

How to Make Money Online With a Website

Yes, of course you can make money online… thousands of people do every day. The only question is finding one of the ways to make money online that actually work.

So forget filling out surveys, stuffing envelopes, or any of the other popular so-called ways to make money online. The best way to earn an income online is through making your own website.

A website business only has to be built once, managed minimally, and will continue to pay forever. As far as a source of income, it doesn’t get much better than making money online.

How Do Websites Make Money?

After receiving several questions in person and email about my websites, I decided to provide a free resource to explain how my websites make money. It’s all actually rather simple — much simpler than what a lot of “experts” seem to imply. The entire process looks like this:

  • Planning. Pick a topic that you love talking about. It can be anything… literally anything. Baseball, decorating, weight lifting, cooking… anything. I picked “financial planning” because I’m obsessed with the topic. This topic is what you’re going to base your website on.
  • Building. Now build the actual website. This is much, much easier these days. A long time ago you would need to pick a domain name, then pick a web host. Now you can just get everything you need with SiteBuildIt, a program for people who want to make money with their websites. It only costs $300 to get a fully functional online business. Using this program is like using email. If you can do one you can do the other, no problem.
  • Writing. Now start writing. Write, write, write. Think of the 20 “pillars” of the topic that everyone needs to know. Open up a document and write on each one of those pillars so that everything that falls under the pillar is discussed. Exhaust the topic.
  • Marketing. Now let people know you’ve written the article. Find people who blog about the topic, find forums about the topic, just tell people. This “word of mouth” marketing is incredibly strong.
  • Monetizing. This is the part where you actually make the money. There are literally dozens of ways to go about it. You can sell your services, place advertisements, sell products, sell books — or even a mixture of several monetization methods.

With time, you’ll get plenty of traffic. I’ve had literally millions of people go to my websites… it’s a great feeling. I don’t have any special hacker skill. I’m just a normal person who is passionate about what he writes about. That’s it.

So, Can I Get Rich?

Short answer: probably not. Long answer: That depends on the topic… but for now, “rich” isn’t something you should be thinking about. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and wealth can’t be earned quickly.

If you want to make money with a website, you’ll have to put all “get rich quick” ideas to rest. Money has to be made through creative, rational and hard work.

This doesn’t mean you won’t be able to make a great income online at some point. You can get there eventually… you’ll just have to be willing to plan well, think creatively and work hard.

Do I have to spend money?

Thousands of people try making money with a free website, like a blog at Blogspot.com or Wordpress.com. Of course you can make money using these free websites… but that’s a horrible mistake. The reason is simple: if you use a free host, you don’t actually own your website or it’s content. Sure, you have copyright over it, but you don’t own the actual website.

So why is this important? As I talk a lot about over at my financial planning website, financial security is paramount.

The idea of placing your entire business in the hands of someone else is almost always a horrible choice. If your goal is to make money, then make sure you own your own website.

The idea that spending money can be beneficial is often seen as flying in the face of conventional personal finance sense. That’s silly, of course… being “frugal” is a great way to save money, not make money. As the old adage goes, you have to spend money to make money.

Monetizing Your Website With Adsense Is Profitable!

How do you maximize your site?

By earning some few dollars per click from displaying Adsense ads on it. Many are now realizing that good money is made from this source of revenue. Try the simple mathematical computation of multiplying those clicks for every page on your website and you get a summation of earnings equivalent to a monthly residual income with that little effort you have made.

Google Adsense is a fast and easy way for website publishers of all sizes to display relevant and text-based Google ads on their website’s content pages and earn money in the process. The ads displayed are related to what your users are looking for on your site. This is the main reason why you both can monetize and enhance your content pages using Adsense.

How much you will be earning will depend on how much the advertisers are willing to pay. It will depend also on the keywords required. If the keywords the advertiser have chosen are in high demand, you could receive more dollars per click. On the other hand, low demand keywords will earn you just a few cents per click.

How can you start making profits out of your website using Adsense?

1. Sign up for an Adsense account. It will only take a few minutes of your time.

2. When the site is accepted, you will be receiving a clip code to include in your web pages. You can insert this code on as many pages or web sites that you want. The AdWords will start appearing immediately after.

3. You will be earning a few cents or some dollars per click when someone starts clicking on the AdWords displayed on any of your web pages. Trying to earn false revenues by repetitively clicking on your own ads is a no-no. This will result in a penalty or the possibility of your site being eliminated. The money you have already earned may be lost because of this.

4. View your statistics. Adsense earnings can be checked anytime by logging into your web site account.

Once you got your account working, you may still want to pattern them to the many sites that are earning more money than you are. It is important to note that there are factors affecting how your website will perform and the amount of money it will give you.

It is a common practice that when a site earning money, the tendency is for the owner to want to make more out of what they are getting already. It usually takes some time combined with trial and error to attain what you want for your Adsense contents.

Time and some important factors that you can practice and use.

How do you increase your Adsense earnings?

1. Choose one topic per page. It is best to write a content for your page with just a few targeted phrases. The search engine will then serve ads that are more relevant which will then result in higher clickthoughs.

2. Using white space around your ad. This can make your ad stand out from the rest of your page so visitors can spot them easily. There are also other choices of colors you can use, provided by search engines, which can harmonize the color of your ad with the web page color.

3. Test your ad placement. It is recommended to use the vertical format that runs down the side of the web page to get more positive results. You can also try both horizontal and vertical formats for a certain period of time to see which one will give you better results.

4. More content-based pages. Widen the theme of your website by creating pages that focus more on your keyword phrases. This will optimize the pages for the search engines. It can not only attract traffic but also make them more relevant for the AdWords to be displayed.

5. Site Build It. This is the perfect tool to be used for creating lots of Adsense revenues. Site Build It has all the tools necessary to quickly achieve a keyword-rich site that can rank high in the search engines. This will also produce a flow of traffic to your site of highly targeted visitors.

How TO Start Making Money With Adsense ?

Adsense is considered as one of the most powerful tool in a website publisher’s arsenal. It enables a person to monetize their sites easily. If used properly, it can generate a very large and healthy income for them. However if you are not using them rightly and just maximizing the income you squeeze from it, you are actually leaving a lot of money on the table. Something all people hate doing.

How you can start earning money with Adsense can be done easily and quickly. You will be amazed at the results you will be getting in such a short period of time.

Start by writing some quality content articles which are also keyword incorporated. There are a lot of people given the gift of being good with words. Writing comes easy for them. Why not make it work in such a way that you will be earning some extra cash in the process.

There are actually three steps to put into mind before you begin writing your ads and having an effective Adsense.

Keyword search. Find some popular subjects, keywords or phrase. Select the ones which you think has more people clicking through. This is actually a keyword selector and suggestion tool that some sites are offering to those who are just their Adsense business.

Writing articles. Start writing original content with keywords from the topics that you have achieved in your search. Take note that search engines are taking pride in the quality of their articles and what you will be writing should keep up with their demands.

Quality content site. Build a quality content site incorporated with Adsense ads that is targeting the subject and keywords of your articles and websites. This is where all that you’ve done initially will go to and this is also where they will prove their worth to you.

The proper positioning of your ads should be done with care. Try to position your ads where surfers are most likely to click on them. According to research, the one place that surfers look first when they visit a certain site is the top left. The reason behind this is not known. Maybe it is because some of the most useful search engine results are at the top of all other rankings. So visitors tend to look in that same place when browsing through other sites.

Some of those who are just starting at this business may think they are doing pretty well already and thinking that their clickthrough rates and CPM figures are quite healthy. However, there are more techniques and styles to generate more clicks to double your earnings. By knowing these techniques and working them to your advantage, you will realize that you will be getting three times more than other people who have been previously doing what they are doing.

Finally, Adsense has some excellent tracking statistics that allows webmasters and publishers to track their results across a number of site on a site by site, page by page, or any other basis you wanted. You should be aware oft his capability and make the most of it because it is one powerful tool that will help you find out which ads are performing best. This way, you can fine tune your Adsense ads and focus more on the ones being visited the most rather than those who are being ignored.

Another thing you should know. Banners and skyscrapers are dead. Ask the experts. So better forget about banners and skyscrapers. Surfers universally ignore these kinds of ad formats. The reason behind this is that they are recognized as an advert and advert are rarely of any interest that’s why people ignore them.

To really start making money with Adsense, you should have a definite focus on what you wanted to achieve and how you will go about achieving them. As with any other kind of business ventures, time is needed coupled with patience.

Do not just ignore your site and your Adsense once you have finished accomplishing them. Spare some time, even an hour, making adjustments to the Adsense ads on your sites to quickly trigger your Adsense income.

Give it a try and you would not regret having gotten into Adsense in the first place.

Google Adsense - The Easiest Money To Make Online?

For the last couple of months, Google Adsense has dominated forums, discussions and newsletters all over the Internet. Already, there are tales of fabulous riches to be made and millions made by those who are just working from home. It seems that Google Adsense have already dominated the internet marketing business and is now considered the easiest way to making money online.

The key to success with Adsense is the placing of ads on pages that are receiving high traffic for high demand keywords. The higher the cost-per-click to the advertiser, the more you will receive per click from your site. Obviously, it does not pay to target low cost-per-click keywords and place them on pages that do not receive hits.

With all the people getting online and clicking away everyday, it is no wonder why Google Adsense has become an instant hit.

For some who are just new to this market, it would be a blow to their pride knowing that their homepage is buried somewhere in the little ads promoting other people’s services. But then, when they get the idea that they are actually earning more money that way, all doubts and skepticism is laid to rest.

There are two major, and clever, factors that some successful webmaster and publishers are learning to blend together in order to make money easier using Adsense.

1. Targeting high traffic pages on your website. If you check on your logs, you will discover that many of your visitors are taking advantage of the free affiliate marketing resources and ebooks that you are offering on your site. In simple words, your ads are working effectively and are generating more clicks. It also means more money for you.

2. Placing Adsense links on pages that are producing little, or better yet, no profit. By placing Adsense on a free resources page, you will reduce the amount of potential customers being lost to other sites. Tricky, but effective nonetheless.

When learned to work effectively, these two factors are actually a good source of producing a minimal amount of revenue from a high traffic page. Many people are using this strategy to pick up some extra and cash with Adsense. This is also especially rewarding to informational sites that focus their efforts on delivering powerful affiliate link free content to their visitors. Now they can gain a monetary return on their services.

With the many techniques that people are now learning on how to make the easiest money by their Adsense, it is not surprising that Google is trying everything to update and polish their Adsense in order to maintain their good image.

The possibility of adding is 2nd tier in Adsense is not impossible. With all the people spending more time in their Adsense now and still more getting into this line of marketing, there is no doubt about the many new improvements yet to be made. Imagine the smiles on the faces of the webmasters and publishers all around the world if ever they sign up for sub-affiliates and double or even triple the amount that they are already earning.
The one particularly handy money-making feature that is available with Adsense now is the ability to filter out up to 200 urls. These gives webmasters the option to block out low value offers from their pages as well as competitors to their websites. Talk about taking only those that are advantageous and discarding the ones that seem “useless”.

With Google Adsense, the possibilities are limitless. Yet there is also the possibility of someone taking advantage of the easy money process that this internet marketing is doing. If you think more about it, these negative factors may force Google to break down and thrash Adsense in the process. If that happens, people would have to go back to the old ways of internet marketing that does not make money online as easy as Adsense.

For now, however, Google Adsense is here to stay. As long as there are people wanting to earn some easy cash online just using their talents, the future ahead is looking good. Besides with all the strict guidelines that Google is enforcing over Adsense, it will take awhile for the Adsense privileges to be spammed and even terminated.

Google’s Interest Based Advertising

Today is the final day for Adsense publishers to update their Privacy Policy in response to Google’s new initiative called Interest Based Advertising. I had mentioned that I don’t recommend opting out of using Interest Based ads and a few readers seemed concerned about this. I thought a short post to clarify my thinking was in order.

(note - this site is not associated with Google.com or Google Adsense and you are encouraged to visit Google directly for more information.)

The idea behind Interest Based Ads is to increase CTR and conversions in regards to Adsense. The current Adsense model is based on Targeted Placement ads and while it has helped Google keep their Advertisers happy in the sense that they save money by not paying for poorly converting clicks (smart pricing) it has not had the effect of increasing Google’s revenue or in increasing the advertisiers overall sales. Ultimately Google needs to increase revenue without loosing advertisers in the process. Moreover Google wants to increase it’s advertising inventory and the best way to achieve this is by getting advertisers to buy more advertising. To do this they will have to provide better ROI to the advertisers.

Hence… Interest Based Ads. The premise being that a large portion of adsense page views are shown daily to untargeted visitors who may be reading any given site for any number of reasons but not necessarily because of any particular interest in the subject matter. Think of people who follow links from one article to another and end up on a site that has little to do thematically with the site they began their journey on. In most cases these visitors are never going to click on an ad and for the few that do they are unlikely to lead to a conversion for the advertiser. The question is - what if such users were presented with ads relevant to their search history rather than ads relevant to the current page they are browsing? Could Google entice more clicks and could this lead to higher conversions for the Advertisers? We will find out…

As for Publishers this should not be viewed negatively as there is a potential upside and escpecially for those publishers who don’t drive primarily targeted traffic to their sites. Given the fact that Google will decide whether to show targeted ads or Interest based ads to any particular visitor means this should reduce the likelyhood of a publisher being smart priced as G can’t hold the publisher accountable for poor performance of Interest Based clicks. (or it shouldn’t as the performance or lack thereof is not in the publishers hands)

To put it simply Google is trying to increase CTR where it feels it can and is not likely to penalize Publishers for poorly converting ads that Google displays on their sites beyond the publisher’s control. The real upside is that publishers may see a nice increase in CTR and earn more revenue even from low paying CPC ads without being smart priced in the process.

Whether this pans out or not I recommend everyone at least take part and test it before opting out. There is nothing to be gained by not giving it a shot. It may not work for some and one can always opt out later.

For those of you driving mostly social traffic this is what you have been waiting for - Google like everyone else is trying to convert social traffic. It is a huge market and so far has proven hard to monetize. Will Interest based ads work? Who knows but if it does publishers will see much better returns from their Adsense accounts. If it doesn’t then publishers are no worse off than they are now. And that is why I recommend everyone give this a trial period in order to evaluate the results. If your earnings tank - opt out but at least find out first.

So You Want to Make Money Online

Who doesn’t want to make more money, right? I get pumped every time I find a new way to make money on the internet. The possibilities for online money making really are endless. The important thing to do when starting out looking for the opportunity that is right for you is to stop and think of what you know and what your passions are. In this post I will cover two of the most basic ways to get started making money online.

The first of these is the most obvious and common way – Paid Surveys. It is simple to start and you set the limit on your earnings depending on the time you have to put toward them. I am sure you have heard of websites that offer lists of companies lining up to pay your for your opinion. What you probably don’t realize is that not all of these sites are the same. Some sites offer these lists for free and some require a membership fee to gain access. So what is the difference and why pay for a list? Well, it can be the difference between getting $.50 per survey and getting $10.00 per survey. The sites that require a membership fee include surveys that on average pay more per survey than the free survey sites. Most of the paid survey sites also offer a list of focus groups you can participate in as well as other ways to make money. Focus group pay by the hour and have the potential for making a lot of cash.

The second way is to start a blog. The important thing to know when starting a blog site is to pick a topic you have some knowledge about. If you don’t you will find very quickly it is hard to write about something you have no experience with and no passion for doing. It is extremely important to keep your blog updated, daily if possible, with fresh content that people will be interested in and will continue visit your site or subscribe to your feed. When you get your blog started and some posts up you can start to focus on getting traffic through social networking sites like twitter, Facebook, and Myspace. Join them, get some followers, and recommend your blog. You will want to set up a Google Adsense account to monetize your blog and you can also sell advertising or promote affiliate products as well to make money. Just as is the case with paid surveys, there are programs you can purchase which step you through setting up, monetizing, and optimizing your blogs to maximize you potential to make money online.

I hope I have given you some helpful tips about how you can get started today making money online. Working from home and making a living online full time is a great feeling but like everything in life worth working for, it takes dedication and there is a learning curve. However, if you work hard and consistently, you will make money online.

How to Setup FeedBurner on Blogger

Blogger is a great blogging platform which almost anybody can use. If you already have a Google account, it’s easy to setup (if not you just need one) and start blogging within minutes. The downside of using Blogger is the lack of built in features that are in my opinion essential to have. I’m going to share with you some of my favorite free Blogger add-ons that I highly recommend using. The first of the bunch being FeedBurner

Step #1 - Setup a FeedBurner Account

FeedBurner’s free rss service (now owned by Google) is very powerful. It allows you to place an rss image like the ones you see below on your blog so your readers can easily subscribe to your blog content. FeedBurner also offers a way for your readers to subscribe by email so everytime you post, an email will automatically get sent to them. Other features include seeing how many blog subscribers you have , which posts are most popular, as well as many other rss feed statistics. You’ve probably seen images like these on websites and especially blogs. This is what they are using. feed-icon32×32.png feedburner-img.gif Create your free account now.

Step #2 - Create Your Feed

The main piece of information you’ll need when setting up your FeedBurner account is your original blog feed url. All blogs automatically come installed with a feed but nothing is really done with it. That’s where the magic of FeedBurner comes in. Your feed url will look something like this:

http://yourblognamehere.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default
http://yourblognamehere.blogger.com/feeds/posts/default

Feedburner offers auto discover so you don’t even need to figure out your feed url. Just enter your Blogger url right on their home page and it will automatically discover your feed. If you have more than one blog, it will list them all so select the blog you’d like to setup.

blogger-enter-url.gif

For bonus points and just for fun, paste the url into your internet explorer browser and watch what comes up. It’s basically the raw text and images from your blog posts. Pretty neat huh?

Follow the rest of the setup wizard and you’ll eventually come to the configuration page. Here’s where you want to select the extra features like “track item clickthroughs” and also check the “FeedBurner Pro” box. They used to charge $4.95 a month extra for this service but ever since Google acquired them, they offer these extra features for free. Why not take advantage of it?

blogger-config-stats.gif

Click the Next » button to finish the setup process and enter the feed management interface. Now you’re now ready to make your FeedBurner feed available on your Blogger site!

Step #3 - Point Your Blogger Feed to FeedBurner

Once you setup an account on FeedBurner, you’ll need to make sure all feed traffic for your blog content goes to your FeedBurner feed. This helps make sure your FeedBurner stats are more accurate and even any existing subscribers to your ‘Original Feed’ are routed through FeedBurner.

-The first step is to get the url of the new feed you just created. When you setup your Feedburner account, it asked you for a name of your first feed. For example, our feed on eBlog Templates looks like this:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/eblogtemplates

Here’s the screen where you’ll find your new feed:
blogger feedburner example

Once you click on the “edit feed details”, you’ll see this screen. Notice what I highlighted in red? That’s the feed url you need to copy and save.

-Now you’re going to log into your Blogger account and head on over to the “Settings” => “Site Feed” tab.

blogger-new-sitefeed.gif

Scroll down until you find the “Post Feed Redirect URL” text box and enter the FeedBurner feed url you wrote down earlier. It will look something like this:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/eblogtemplates

blogger-redir.gif

Make sure you type in your entire feed address including the “http://” portion otherwise you’ll have problems later. Click the “Save Settings” button and you should see the message “Settings were Saved Successfully”. Now Blogger will redirect all feed traffic for your blog to your FeedBurner feed which is exactly what we want!

Step #4 - Promote Your FeedBurner Feed on Your Blog

So now that everything is wired up properly we just need to promote it using one of those cool rss buttons on our blog. FeedBurner calls these icons chicklets (cute huh) so that’s what we’ll call it. Switch back over to your FeedBurner account and click on the “Publicize” tab.

blogger-click-publicize.gif

Then on the left side find and click on “chicklet chooser” and select one of the icons which will end up on your blog.

blogger-start-chk-chs.gif

Then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the drop-down. You’ll want to select “Blogger” to add the chicklet as a widget to your blog.

blogger-widget.gif

After you click the “Go!” button, Blogger will open in a new window and you’ll need to follow the prompts to continue to add the new widget.

Once you click on “Add Widget”, it will take you to your Blogger page elements layout where you can arrange the new FeedBurner widget. Save your layout and you’re done! You should now have a cool-looking rss feed icon on your blog where anyone can easily subscribe to your blog. Remember to login to FeedBurner often to check out your stats. You can accurately see the number of subscribers and also get a good idea of what people are reading. It helps you decide the types of things to write about in the future!

Bonus Step - Setting Up the Subscribe Via Email Option

At this point you might just be happy with the rss FeedBurner widget but I’d recommend also giving your readers the option to subscribe via email as well. Not everyone uses rss and email is much more familiar to everyone so why not give them both options?

By default, the email option is not turned on within FeedBurner so let’s go switch it on now. Navigate over to your “Publicize” tab and then click on “Email Subscriptions”. Here you’ll scroll all the way down to the bottom and then click the “activate” button to turn it on.

This step didn’t add anything to your blog it just turned on the feature so you are able to use the email subscriptions option. Next, you’ll need to copy the email box code and paste it somewhere on your site. You can also use the handy Blogger widget generator which will save you the hassle of mucking with your template code, but most newer templates that you download require you to tweak the template code itself.

Now that you’ve got the basics setup, I recommend spending some additional time browsing around FeedBurner’s interface because there’s lots of other cool options for you to configure. The best things in life are always free.

For two days I have been getting a constant stream of "experts" from Digital Point filling my inbox with troll crap - the usual "nobody will tell you how to make money online for free", "he must be selling something", "it's a fake" and so on. It is ironic that DP and Warrior are full of people flogging crap and noobs looking for answers and yet when someone mentions that you can learn everything you need to make money online for free just by reading a blog the trolls come out in force. It says a lot about the mentality online and why people don't succeed - a smart cookie might wonder how a PR0 free Blogger blog ranks on top of the make money online niche and do a little reading. The losers will never figure it out but it doesn't stop them from voicing their noob opinions.
